Health Regulation

There is a new ADHD drug that is being reviewed by the FDA. The FDA is giving the drug a thorough investigation to make sure that there will not be any heart problems in both children and adults. Although this is a serous investigation, the end result of a positive ADHD drug that can be made available for consumption is always on the lookout from those who suffer with the disease. According to various reports, the FDA had begun its preliminary research, but had to halt the process due to financial set backs.

The FDA does, however, have every plan to reinstate the investigation process of the drug once there are additional funds that can be use for the medication. The FDA plans to research 500,000 patients who were diagnosed to take the medication. This should prove to be beneficial for study and trends.

Another Recall of Leafy Greens Linked to E.Coli

October 18, 2007

Public Health - Disease

As if last year’s spinach scare of E. Coli was not enough, Dole has recalled their mixed salad bags due to a possible E. Coli outbreak. To date, there are nine states that have been notified of the possible outbreak. The origins of the E. Coli outbreak was said to have started in Canada. As of Monday, September 17, there was a voluntary recall for the Dole Hearts Delight salad mix.

Dole, who was under much scrutiny for its spinach recall last year, is taking all of the precautionary steps as needed for this sudden outbreak. The Hearts Delight salad mix has an expatriation date of September 19, 2007. Anyone who has this salad bag mix in their refrigerators are encouraged to throw out the salad, and contact a medical physician immediately should any symptoms of the E. Coli bacteria should be prevalent.

An Additional 10,000 Birds to be Killed Due to Outbreak

October 18, 2007

Disease

The latest flu outbreak in Guangzhou, China has proven to be quite stressful and taxing for those that live in the community. In an attempt to control the bird flu from spreading, there is a planned execution of 10,000 domestic birds, thanks to their local government. Tests that were processed on other birds thought to carry the bird flu came back as positive. The Chinese government is not taking any chances, and will move forward with their actions.

The reason for the elimination of so many birds is due to the fact that the way that the bird flu virus is contract is via bird and human contact. Chinese officials have urged their citizens to not touch birds, domestic or wild, and to make sure that they are taking all of the precautionary steps as needed. The officials in Guangzhou hope that the execution will put some sort of a stop on the spreading of the deadly disease.

32 Year Old Mother’s Death From Gene Therapy is Still Under Investigation

October 18, 2007

Gene Therapy

A committee that has been investigating the death of a 36 year old mother due to her arthritis medicine is still under investigation. The female, who was a willing participant in a gene therapy study, was apparently in no condition to be in the gene therapy testing, according to her husband. There are impending questions from the investigating committee on whether or not the process by which she was selected for was legit enough for her, or if it was simply too easy for anyone to take.

The patient’s gene therapy has been somewhat of a setback to the gene therapy researchers. This has made those that conducted the gene therapy look bad, as they have also had a bad rap with a previous death from a gene therapy session. Staying true to the course, the investigators will not concede until they have come to the bottom of the investigation.

Drug Delivery: Defined

October 18, 2007

Drug delivery refers to the manner in which a drug or pharmaceutical is administered to a patient that is either orally, through the skin, pulmonary or transdermal drug delivery. The materials provided by the pharmaceutical companies can be broken into two categories that is to create new drugs considering latest developments or to modify and improvise existing materials used in the drugs. Either ways one has to address issues relating to reducing toxicity of drugs, increasing their absorption and improving their release profile in the body.

Variable Methods of Drug Delivery

The delivery of drugs can vary depending on the illness. Transdermal drug delivery can be administered through the skin using micro needle or needle less technologies. They can be used to treat skin disorders, hormone replacement therapy, angina pectoris, smoking cessation and even neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. Many of the latest developments in the treatment of neurological disorders will be biological therapies like cell, gene and antisense therapies. Cell therapy can be used to treat cardiac disorders, cancer, genetic disorders, fat reduction and diabetes mellitus. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is now replacing the old bone marrow transplant therapy. The cardiovascular market will have new approaches such as reversing of cardiovascular conditions utilizing cutting edge cell and gene based therapies. For diabetics Insulin pen devices were sold in Europe and Japan whereas syringes and pumps dominated the US markets. India and China are emerging as future potential markets for insulin delivery devices. Cancer drug delivery has come up with innovative methods based on concepts of molecular biology of cancer, these may be injected into the arterial circulation and guided to the tumour by magnetic field for targeted drug delivery, RNA’s are also used to be targeted to tumours in some cases.

Oral delivery is the most popular and cost effective method however implantable, inject able and pulmonary methods are options for quick distribution and stronger dosages. Transdermal patches and new electric transfers are painless options for medicines that cannot be had orally. Pulmonary drug delivery market is expected to rise steadily in the next five years owing to new technologies such as dry powder inhalers.

Bio Technology: Defined

October 18, 2007

Biotechnology is a technology based on biology, when used in medicine, food science and agriculture. It involves the use of living organisms, biological systems to alter products or processes for a particular use. The laboratory based techniques emerging in biological research like recombinant DNA or tissue culture are some examples of this field. In a broad sense, scientific knowledge is used to manage microorganisms, cells and tissues of higher organisms in such a way that goods and services useful for human beings are available. Biotechnology is a blend of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology and embryology. It is also linked with information technology, chemical engineering and robotics.

Types

Biotechnology has established its use in four major industrial regions – agriculture, crop production, health care, non-food and environmental use of crops. Use of organisms to produce organic products, use of naturally present bacteria by the mining industry are some of the illustrations of Biotechnology. Production of biological weapons and Bioremediation are the other examples. Red Biotechnology is related to medical processes. The methods of designing organisms for the production of antibiotics, engineering of genetic cures by genomic manipulation are a few topics in this type of Biotechnology. White or Grey Biotechnology is concerning the industrial processes. Designing an organism to generate a useful chemical and use of enzymes as industrial catalysts for production of chemicals are related to this category. When Biotechnology is applied to agriculture, it is called Green Biotechnology. In this transgenic plants are designed to grow under particular environmental conditions or along with particular agricultural chemicals. Engineering of a plant to express a pesticide to eradicate the need of the external use of pesticides in an environmentally friendly mode is an interesting topic. The aquatic and marine uses of Biotechnology are called Blue Biotechnology.
